Why Don't Formula E Cars Drive Flat-Out? formula e technology

by Trần Hào

Driving as fast as possible isn’t the only goal in Formula E – efficiency is key, so we’ve gone behind the scenes with Mahindra Racing, as well as created exclusive 3D animations of the Formula E’s powertrain to take a look at how they’ve built their car, and see what Racing Driver Alexander Sims thinks about driving this year’s machinery.

Yes, please make the races shorter and drive flat out every lap. Noone cares about efficiency, this isn't Le Mans. If I wanna see a bunch of Hyundai Accents driving mildly aggressive at medium highway speeds I can take a drive out on the highway. It'll be more entertaining.

People watch car racing because they want to see cars doing what they themselves are not allowed to do on the road. I watch my gas mileage / battery usage every day as a typical motorist. Why would I give a solitary rat turd about efficiency in a car race on TV?

I am a complete tech noob, but why is the battery alternating current that still needs to be converted? Doesn't that conversion damage the efficiency???

Shorter races and going flat out 100% of the time? Somewhere I hear Jeremy Clarkson screaming “SPEEEEEED!”

I'd love to see the difference between flat out E and slow-looking current E on tv

The tracks they race on are questionable at best. Extremely tight. I get that it’s designed around the cars power and to promote close racing, but seeing a f1 car flying down the Kemmel straight will always take the cake for most people.

The other reason FE cars don't drive flat-out is because, if you've ever played with an rc car, you know how quickly electric cars get up to speed. And then they just stay at that speed, it'd be very dull. They don't go very fast, so you'd have slow as hell cars droaning around a track. But having start and stop tracks, you take advantage of an electric car's insane levels of torque.

My mother watched a Formula E race and asked "Why are they so slow?" True story.

She's 75 and thinks it's total garbage.

Formula E needs to drop the street tracks and music before it will be considered a real race class and not just a gimmick.

So, Formula E is not really about racing. It is more like a marathon. Can you make a marathon game exciting? I guess not.

Not driving flat-out because of efficiency? Wouldn't that make the cars not as efficient as they need?
